Ask Larry: What Are the Payoffs on the World Bet?

20 February 2005

Larry,

If you place a six for $180, what does it pay? Also if you lay a six for $210, what does it pay?

Regards,
John

Hi, John,

When you place the 6/8 you get 7:6 odds, so when you bet $180 you win $210.

When you LAY the 6/8 you get 5:6 odds, so when you bet $210 you get $175, less vig.

Good luck,
Larry

Mr. Edell,

I know there's a world bet, which pays off on the 2, 3, 7, 11, 12, and I know it must be made in $5 increments. But I've never really found its payoffs listed anywhere. What are they?

Best Regards,
Laurie

Hi, Laurie,

The individual pay offs for a world bet are as follows:

2/12 - 30:1
3/11 - 15:1
7 - 4:1

So if you were to bet $5 world ($1 each) and the 3 rolled on the very next roll, you would win $15 (15 x $1) but you would lose the other $4 on the layout, so you really win $11.

Good luck,
Larry

Larry,

This question is more about comps than craps. If you are playing craps with a spread of $50 (average) for 4 hours, could you expect the same comps as playing with an average spread of $100 for 2 hours? This is, of course, assuming that the casino bases comps on spread and not bet.

Also, is your rate of return (or expected loss) in both of these situations the same? My instinct tells me yes for both of these, but I am not sure how much that instinct is worth.

Adam

Hi, Adam,

You are correct; $50 for four hours counts the same as $100 for two hours. Your buy in is also considered, so if your buy in at the $100 level is twice that of the $50 level, you may even get more comps. Also, from the casino's viewpoint, they would rather have one $100 player than two $50 players, so they are more likely to "bump up" a $100 player than a $50 one!

Good luck,
Larry
