Ask Larry: Craps Bankroll

27 June 2004

How much should I take to vegas to spend in one day?

Gee, it depends on what kind of player you are. Experts usually agree that you should bring 100X your average bet amount. If you normally bet $5 units, you should bring $500. You should break this $500 up into five sessions of $100 each - this way you can't lose everything at once. Use sound money management, a good system, and utilize comps and you'll have a profitable weekend!

Good luck,
Larry

If a table has on 5X odds, what is the real advantage? I have to lay 60 to get 70 on a Place bet of the 6 or 8 and if I lay 10 on the front line with 50 on odds for the 6 or 8 point, I in turn receive 70 dollars. 10 for the front line and 60 on the odds. Again 60 to get 70. Is it me or what?

Feva

Hi, Feva,

Well, you're close. If you add odds you get true odds. You get 7:6 on place bets, so if you bet $60 placing the six or eight you do get back $70.

However, on the pass line with a $10 flat bet, you get 6:5 odds, true odds, not 7:6 odds. So if you add $60 in odds to your $10 flat bet, you get $72 for the odds portion (at 6:5) plus $10 for the flat portion, or a total of $82.

Good luck,
Larry

Please tell me about odds on a don't pass bet. Are you betting more to win less, and if so why would you?

Jackson

Hi, Jackson,

Yes, you do bet more to win less on a don't pass bet. This is because you always have the advantage on any don't bet AFTER the point is established.

For example, if you have a flat $25 bet and the point is 10, you can add $50 in odds on a 2X table. You would win $25 for your flat bet, but only $25 for your odds bet, as it pays 1:2 - but you have the advantage on this bet, rather than the casino!

Good luck,
Larry
